Costs Soar For Defending Alleged Triple-Murderer

Last updated on Monday, November 26, 2012

(CROWN POINT) - The soaring costs of defending a Gary man charged with killing his wife and two stepchildren could make the case the most expensive ever for Lake County’s taxpayers.

The Times of Munster reports that 46-year-old Kevin Isom's defense costs were $379,356 as of Sept. 19, with $189,678 reimbursed to the county.

That compares with the $411,907 in defense costs in the case against Daryl Jeter, who was convicted in the 2003 killing of Indiana State Trooper Scott Patrick. In the Jeter case, the county was reimbursed a total of $205,954.

The ballooning cost of Isom's trial is due to his trial entering a second round of jury selection, which begins Monday. The first round ended in a March mistrial when the jury pool was depleted.
