Butler University Placed On Lock Down

Last updated on Monday, November 5, 2012

(BUTLER UNIVERSITY) - The campus of Butler University was locked down for hours Sunday as police pursued a suspect believed to be armed.

Ebone Monet, of RTV6 reports, two suspects robbed the CVS pharmacy on 56th Street near Illinois Street, then fled with a bag of drugs and headed toward campus in a black mustang, police said.

After entering campus, the suspects exited the car, one heading south toward Irwin Library and the other heading west toward the canal, police said.

Officers apprehended the southbound suspect near the library, but the second suspect led police on a chase through campus.

The campus, which was busier than usual as Butler was hosting family weekend, was locked down during the pursuit.

Campus police said IMPD used a K-9 unit to track the at-large suspect to a wooded area near campus, but he was not located.

Police said the suspect is a white male about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds, wearing blue jeans and a burgundy shirt.

Butler police took to email, text alerts and social media to warn students to stay inside and not prop doors open while they searched campus for the man.

"Immediately once it happened we got multiple emails and we were notified directly... that there was something going on, to stay inside," said Butler student Jonathan Golliher.

Butler officials said some crime on campus is just part of being so close to the heart of the circle city.

"It's not a gated community, so there's always a chance that something could happen off of campus and spill onto campus," said BUPD officer Andrew Ryan. "That is the nature of the community we live in, and we're not going to gate off our community... hopefully if something does come this way we can be prepared for it. "
