Woman Attacks Customer In Checkout Line

Last updated on Sunday, October 28, 2012

(MERRILLVILLE) - Prosecutors in northwest Indiana have filed criminal charges against a woman accused of cutting in line at a department store checkout and then attacking a woman who complained.

The Post-Tribune and The Times report that Lake County prosecutors filed charges of strangulation and battery Friday against Chalonder Ervin of Merrillville. Ervin was not being held at the county jail Saturday, and a phone at her listed number rang unanswered when The Associated Press called seeking comment.

Police say a security camera recorded Ervin on Oct. 12 when she skipped in line in front of another woman and her two children. The two women exchanged words and Ervin allegedly grabbed the other woman by the neck. Another customer broke up the fight.

Police say they received an anonymous tip identifying Ervin.
