Study Set On Camp Atterbury Economic Boost

Last updated on Tuesday, October 16, 2012

(EDINBURGH) - An Indiana University professor is leading a study into the economic impact the thousands of additional soldiers training at Camp Atterbury has had on the surrounding area.

The Indiana National Guard asked for the study on the base near Edinburgh. Atterbury spokeswoman Joanna Bryant Caplette tells The Daily Journal that military leaders want information on the post's economic contribution in order to demonstrate its worth to elected officials.

Thousands of soldiers underwent training at Atterbury before deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and the Army is spending about $75 million on expansion projects there.

IU professor Barry Rubin says the impact study could help Atterbury get training assignments now at bases that will be closed.
