(HOVEY LAKE) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a tree stand accident that occurred Tuesday night on Hovey Lake Fish and Wildlife Area in an area known as the Wabash Lowlands.

According to ICO Mike Kellner, 52-year-old Kerry Butler, of Mt. Vernon, had been deer hunting from a "climber" type tree stand on the fish and wildlife property early Tuesday night. As he was climbing down the tree, he lost his footing and fell approximately 10 feet, receiving injuries to his back and head.

The fall occurred around 6:35 p.m. Butler made a 911call with his cell phone making contact with the Saline County Dispatch in Illinois which then contacted the Posey County Dispatch.

Butler then crawled to his vehicle and drove about four miles, meeting the Point Township Fire Department, Posey County EMS, and the Posey County Sheriff's Department who had responded to the scene.

Butler was transported to Deaconess Hospital where he was treated and released.

Butler was not wearing a safety harness at the time of the accident.
