Pizzeria Worker Shoots, Kills Robber

Last updated on Tuesday, October 16, 2012

(RICHMOND) - Police say a man killed while trying to rob a pizzeria was shot once in the chest and twice in the hip by the owner of the store.

Richmond police tell the Palladium-Item that 30-year-old Freddie McCoy was wearing a ski mask and gloves and standing at the counter of Mercurio's Pizza when he was shot Saturday night. They did not say if McCoy was armed.

Capt. Jim Branam says there were seven or eight employees in the store at the time of the shooting but no customers.

McCoy died at Reid Hospital after being treated by medical personnel at the scene of the shooting, Branam said.

Property records identify the owner as Terry Padgett. A message seeking comment was left at the pizzeria Monday, but a status update on its Facebook page says "we will not be discussing the events that unfolded Saturday night."

It was the second time in two weeks a robber has been shot and killed during an attempted robbery in central Indiana. An Indianapolis liquor store employee fatally shot an armed robber during a holdup Sept. 30.
