Parke County Covered Bridge Festival Kicks Off Today

Last updated on Friday, October 12, 2012

(PARKE COUNTY) - The turning of the leaves may bring many things to mind…school is back…winter is coming…and in Parke County it’s time for the Covered Bridge Festival.

The fall tradition will be 56 this year but it has no signs of slowing down.

Tony Grant of NBC 2 news reports if this is your first time...you may wonder...where should i start?

"I would also advise you get a map...they are free. Get them at several places in the community or here at the tourists center."

Once you have your map Harkrider suggests starting on the square in downtown Rockville.

And you may notice arrows around the county pointing you in different directions.
They show you the best way to see all the different events throughout the area.

"When you take the red or black route you have Bridgeton, Mansfield, and Rosedale.
When you go on the brown route you'll see Mecca and Montezuma. The blue or yellow route we are offering Bloomingdale or Tangier."

Now that you know how to get around....you may wonder...what is there to do?

"People do really love to come and see the covered bridges. And of course now we have a lot of people who come to shop. They will start their Christmas shopping early."

Getting Christmas shopping out of the way is always a good thing.

And how many malls have hundreds of vendors offering great food?

"My goodness...you can find everything from every kind of desert to full course meals throughout the county."

The Covered Bridge Festival brings people from all over the country, and that can cause some traffic headaches.

"There's going to be a lot of traffic...people in and out between cars. So we just ask that the visitors be patient."

And don't forget about patience once you arrive.

"There are spaces where parking is available by paying for the day...or the parking along the streets is free. If you're able to find a spot that way."

The ten day Covered Bridge Festival kicks off on Friday
