Newsweek Shutting Down Printed Edition

Last updated on Friday, October 19, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - After 80 years on paper, Newsweek is moving to online only content beginning early next year.

It will be called Newsweek Global and subscribers will still need to pay.

Interim Dean of the IU School of Journalism, Michael Evans, says it's a big step, but not a surprising one. Evans says the move was expected due to the cost of printing on paper, delivering the magazine and fulfilling circulation.

Evans says many publications have failed at charging to read online content and feels Newsweek will try many options for its subscribers. Evans points out that contributors will benefit from the move due to Newsweek no longer having space limitations. Evans says Newsweek can now make decisions on the quality of the story and not space limitations.

Some Newsweek content will appear on their partner website, The Daily Beast.
