(VINCENNES) Vincennes City Police Detectives, The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives, and the Evansville Police Department have arrested a former Vincennes resident in Evansville on Federal Weapons Charges and Armed Robbery.
WTHI reports, late Friday Afternoon, Officers arrested 25 year old Antonio "Tone" Currie of Evansville.
Currie became the subject of investigation earlier in the year after furtherance of an investigation of Armed Robbery of a group of Vincennes University students at a N. 6 TH Street address in Vincennes.
Then, Police charged the tenants of 713 N. 6 TH Street with miscellaneous drug charges including dealing in Marijuana, and the Armed Robbery was determined to be drug related.
During the incident, a tenant was battered and a shot was fired inside the residence by one of the suspects.
Another Armed Robbery at a second Vincennes residence occurred early in the summer. Again, shots were fired and it was also suspected to be a drug related robbery.
Further investigation of these two incidents, and Police intelligence operations resulted in a Federal Grand Jury Indictment of Currie for Weapons Violations and Armed Robbery.
Shortly before 5PM Friday, the Evansville Police Department Swat Team raided the residence at 501 S. Denby Avenue and arrested Currie and detained another male of interest, present at the residence. Police also located another firearm inside the residence.
Further investigation resulted in a second arrest of 23 year old Martez N. Smith.
Police continue to investigate a series of crimes that occurred in Vincennes and Evansville over the course of several months.
Antonio Currie had been the subject of Police investigation in a number of past crimes in Vincennes including drug trafficking and weapons violations. In February 2007, Antonio Currie and another male were both shot in an exchanged of gunfire at a Vincennes Apartment Complex at 1003 Bayou Street in a dispute believed to be over gang affiliation and drug trafficking.
Currie is now in Federal custody and faces up to 35 years in prison for his suspected crimes.
