DNR Changes Geocaching Rules For Parks

Last updated on Saturday, October 27, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says it has revised geocaching polices for its properties to better balance outdoor recreation and conservation.

Geocaching is an activity in which participants search for "caches" using a GPS unit and coordinates that are listed online. Most caches are small containers with logbooks and a few small trinkets.

The agency says the revisions approved last month by the Natural Resources Commission have gone into effect. They open more DNR properties to geocaching and allow more caches at properties where the activity is permitted.

However, it says the caches also subject to new location restrictions aimed at protecting sensitive natural areas.
