(VINCENNES) -A southern Indiana county is going to the dogs this week in perhaps the best way.

Mike Grant, of WTHI reports, Knox County is hosting the American Police Canine Association National Trials.

The event gives the K9 officers a chance to show off their training and the public a chance to see how they work.

If a dog is man's best friend then a police officer's canine must be an even bigger pal.

For the past year, Knox County has been getting ready for the National K9 trials and now the games are set to begin.

"We're ready to go," said Knox County K9 Supervisor Deputy Jarret Ford. "We have all our venues in place. All the teams are in town. They came as far as Texas and Canada, as well as 5 or 6 other states."

About 60 of the K-9's and their officers are in town to work on everything from locating drugs to agility.

While the sheriff's department is the official sponsor of the event organizers say they couldn't do it without a lot of help from the community and help from sponsors.

The sessions will run throughout the day most of this week and people are encouraged to come out and see the dogs and officers at work.

"They are going to see how officers and their K9 partners work together and the purpose of the dogs themselves and what they can and will be able to do," said Knox County Sheriff Mike Morris.

All part of an event that shows how a well trained dog can make a difference for police.

The public is invited to a special event on Wednesday evening at 7 at Inman Field. It will include helicopters, K9 demonstrations and a fireworks display.

Most the trials are open to the public.

*Reminder to all the public, Do Not bring your pets to any of the events.*
