Pacer Reggie Miller To Be Inducted Into Basketball Hall Of Fame Tonight

Last updated on Friday, September 7, 2012

(SPRINGFIELD, Mass.) - As Reggie Miller prepares to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, he won’t be sharing the moment with another Pacers legend.

It was announced Thursday that Mel Daniels, a star from the ABA days, is ill and won't be able to attend Friday night's ceremony in Springfield, Mass.

Miller, who received his Hall of Fame blazer as planned Thursday, said he was looking forward to standing next to his good friend at the big event.

Miller was chosen by the Pacers with the 11th pick in the 1st round of the 1987 NBA Draft, a pick many fans hoped would be used to get Hoosier Steve Alford.

"It was my job to win them over, because I knew I wasn't the most popular choice at the time," Miller said. "But that was easy. I knew my pedigree would bring them to the table."

The naysayers disappeared as Miller racked up 25,000 career points and more than 2,000 three-pointers.

Miller said he was still working on his speech for tonights event. He said he gets choked up just thinking about it.

Miller's sister, Cheryl Miller, who is already in the Hall of Fame, will present her brother at the ceremony.
