(INDIANAPOLIS) - A longtime Indianapolis jeweler is recovering from a bullet wound after struggling with a home invasion robber in the bedroom of his north side home late Saturday night.
Fox59 News reports, Gary Thrapp, owner of G. Thrapp Jewelers in the 5600 block of North Illinois Street, was shot once in the abdomen after robbers entered his home through an open back patio door.
"I jumped up from a sound asleep and was face-to-face with one of them," Thrapp told Fox 59 News during an exclusive phone interview from his hospital bed.
"I wrestled with one guy who seemed to be shouting out the orders and he shot his pistol and there were three rounds and one of them was point blank into my mid-section.
Thrapp said he jumped out of bed and fought with the gunman and was shot.
Thrapp estimates the robbers were in his home for ten minutes.
He thinks his house was targeted by the robbers because he has been in the jewelry business for more than 30 years.
Thrapp has not yet spoken to metro police detectives and therefore hasn't released a description of the robbers.
At least five times in the last two years metro area jewelers have been robbed and one, David Pedigo, was shot to death inside his Fountain Square store.
Kokomo police recently arrested two men from Indianapolis who were wanted for an attempted smash-and-grab robbery at a north side Marion County jewelry story.
