Last updated on Sunday, August 12, 2012

(WEST TERRE HAUTE) - Early Saturday morning, Judith Maples, 74, was walking from a local bar to her daughter’s house in West Terre Haute when she noticed a man urinating in public.

Maples approached the man, Kyle Marvel, 20, of West Terre Haute, and asked that he cover himself.

Kyle Marvel, 20, then proceeded to batter Maples, and left her bleeding with multiple injuries on the ground.

Marvel's family members and friends said that he didn't realize the severity of the situation at first, and he and his group of friends helped her afterward.

Maples sustained a number of injuries, including lacerations on her head and arms, multiple fractures and bruises all over her body.

Transcare transported Maples to Regional Hospital where she is being treated for her injuries.

Marvel was arrested for Battery Resulting in Serious Bodily Injuries.

According to witnesses, Marvel said that he didn't remember hitting and kicking her.

In the preliminary hearing, Marvel apologized to Maples's family.

Marvel is being held in the Vigo County Jail on $60,000 bond.

His next trial hearing will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
