(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana employment officials are questioning a recent jump in the state’s jobless numbers.
The federal government analysis of Indiana's unemployment for July indicated the state's rate increased from 8 percent in June to 8.2 percent.
But officials with the Department of Workforce Development found that Indiana added 3,300 private sector jobs in July, the ninth-straight monthly increase.
"We have raised several questions with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics about discrepancies in June and July's labor force data," Department of Workforce Development Commissioner Scott B. Sanders said in a news release. "The numbers seem to indicate nearly 46,000 Hoosiers went from gainfully employed in May to missing from the labor force in July, with no explanation."
Sanders stressed that more reliable long-term numbers show Indiana is still significantly outperforming the U.S. average for private sector job growth, manufacturing growth and nearly every other employment sector in 2012.
