Security Guard Dies In Liquor Store Fire

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A security guard has died following a fire early this morning at a north side liquor store

Jim Scott, of WISH TV reports, Indianapolis firefighters and Metropolitan Police are on the scene at Community Spirits Liquor Store at West 38th Street and North Capitol.

The female store clerk told investigators the security guard who had worked at the store for the past six months had been acting strange most of the night but did not say much.

Shortly before closing time around 2 AM. the clerk said the guard pushed her into the lobby of the store, closed the door, and began breaking bottles. When she was able to look into the room, she said she saw flames.

The first fire units on the scene reported heavy smoke and an eyewitness report of a person trapped inside.

The injured guard was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital. Efforts to revive the victim were unsuccessful.

The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes. Damage to the liquor store is estimated at $125,000.

The identity of the security guard has not been released pending notification of family members.

The fire and the death remain under investigation.
