Police: 17-Year-Old Found With Gun At School

Last updated on Friday, August 17, 2012

(TRAFALGAR) - A 17-year-old Indian Creek High School student has been arrested after he came to school with a gun, police said.

Dr. Matthew Prusiecki, the superintendent of Nineveh-Hensley-Jackson Schools, told RTV6 that the district was alerted after another student saw the boy showing the gun in the school parking lot Monday.

The student is facing a felony charge of possession of a handgun without a permit on school property. He's being held at the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center while prosecutors decide whether to charge him as an adult.

Officers searched the boy's home and found the gun - a Sterling .22 caliber semi-automatic - with a bullet inside, and drug paraphernalia, police said.

The district alerted parents to the situation with a phone message on Wednesday.

"Working with local authorities, an immediate investigation was conducted. A prompt resolution was reached with the assistance of the Trafalgar Police Department," Prusiecki said in the message. "Furthermore, this student is not allowed to attend school while we work through the due process of holding this student accountable for his actions."

"Down here at Indian Creek, I mean we're a small system, but it just goes to show you everywhere, you know, it can happen any place," Thomas Pahl, father of a senior at the school, told RTV6's Drew Smith.

Prusiecki said the notification system is effective.

"We've done that in the past for a lot of other things, and I think the protocol is what the community's used to," he said. "The goal is to make sure all the parents are aware of it."

But some parents who received the call believe it came far too late.

"You know, I think I'd like to know... at the moment that it happens," said Indian Creek parent Clint Voris. "I think it should almost be an emergency-type call, instead of get something late that afternoon."

Police also charged the 17-year-old with possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia that they said they found after searching the suspect's home.

The 17-year-old was suspended pending expulsion.
