(FORT WAYNE) - An Indiana crackdown on people who are collecting unemployment illegally has led to more than a dozen felony convictions so far this year, and state officials say they plan to keep up the heat.
Department of Workforce Development spokesman Joe Frank says many of those being caught are working full-time but continue collecting unemployment to supplement their salaries.
The Journal Gazette reports more than 135 people have been caught falsely claiming jobless benefits since 2006.
Workforce development officials say cracking down on violators ensures that those who are eligible for unemployment benefits can receive them.
Offenders are forced to repay the money and face penalties including probation and permanent criminal records. Their names and photographs are displayed on the department's website.
