(INDIANAPOLIS) - After misplacing $12,500 and getting most of it back, a man had the chance to pay the favor forward.
It all started when mechanical shop owner Andy Ellis misplaced a lot of cash.
"Last week I saw a car that I was wanting to buy and I had gathered some cash," Ellis told RTV6's Matthew Trees.
He placed the envelope full of money on a toolbox on his truck he was working on and forgot about it.
"The cash was still on my toolbox when I pulled out of my garage," he said.
Ellis passed out fliers about the lost money, and then he got a call from police.
A 19-year-old had turned in some of the cash he grabbed as it was blowing all over the highway.
"And cars were pulling over and people were kind of scrambling to pick up cash," Ellis said. "A student coming home from Bloomington was able to gather some cash and turned it into Southport police."
Later, Ellis saw a Colts backpack along the road while driving. He couldn't believe what he found inside.
MJ Allison, 79, who lives on the city's south side, had lost the bag, which contained all of her money and identification.
"This bag is my life," Allison said.
She said she couldn't believe the call she got from Ellis.
"They had my bag, and I said, 'You are angels!'" she said.
Ellis said he was glad to be on both the giving and receiving end.
"It's just really amazing," he said.
