(ATTICA) - A cat and kitten were killed and two dogs were injured when someone enticed the animals to fight during a break-in at an Attica animal shelter.

The Paws'n'Claws shelter was broken into Aug. 9.

During the overnight break-in, someone put two dogs in a small cage together, likely to try to entice them to fight, and then put a cat into the cage as well, animal advocates said.

They also put a kitten into another cage with a dog and her puppies.

When shelter employees came to work the next day, they found the cat and the kitten dead.

The two dogs were found suffering from gashes and covered in blood, workers said.

"It takes a truly callous individual to break into a shelter and instigate fights between homeless dogs and cats," Anne Sterling, Indiana state director for the Humane Society of the United States, said in a news release.

The organization is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case. Other local donors have offered up $1,500 for the reward as well.

Anyone with information about the break-in is asked to call the Attica Police Department at 765-762-2449.
