Last updated on Sunday, July 22, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - A 9-year-old boy was shot in what appeared to have been a random shooting, police said.

Police said Kavon Jones was playing football in a group of 25 to 30 children when someone drove up, got out of the car, fired multiple shots, then drove away.

Police described the suspect vehicle as an older model gray sedan that had four occupants.

Investigators reported the shooter was a heavy-set black man with braids who was wearing a gray T-shirt.

Police said the man exited the vehicle, fired several gunshots then returned to the vehicle, which drove toward 38th Street then turned left on Sherman Drive.

Officials reported that the incident occurred at Villages at Mill Crossing apartment complex, near the intersection of 38th Street and Sherman Drive.

The child was reported to be in good condition at Riley Hospital for Children, police said.
