Marion County Reports Cases Of West Nile Virus

Last updated on Tuesday, July 3, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The Marion County Health Department says West Nile Virus has made an early appearance this year.

Spokesman John Althardt says mosquito control has confirmed two samples that tested positive for the virus. However, he adds there have not been any human cases reported in residents yet this year.

Althardt says one of the samples was taken in Warren Township, the other in Perry Township. Althardt says it's likely that mosquitoes carrying the virus are active throughout the county. He says the samples are the first to be confirmed.

Althardt says residents are encouraged to clean outdoor containers that hold water and provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes. He adds people should wear mosquito repellent while outdoors and long pants and sleeves.

For mosquito-related information, contact the Marion County Public Health Department at 221-7440.
