Last updated on Sunday, July 1, 2012

(LAWRENCE) - A man was found fatally stabbed in Lawrence early Saturday morning, and police are looking for a person of interest.

A Lawrence police officer was flagged down and told about a stabbing at a home in the 9200 block of East 42nd Street about 3 a.m., said Indianapolis police spokesman Kendale Adams.

"The victim was suffering from stab wounds to the chest and was transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition, where he later died," Adams said.

Police have identified the victim, but they did not release his name, pending notification of family members.

Investigators are looking for Damon Patton, 37, of Indianapolis, in connection with the stabbing. Police believe Patton may also be injured but fled before officers arrived.

Patton is black, 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs about 260 pounds.

Police asked anyone with information about Patton or the stabbing to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
