ISTEP Scores Released Tuesday

Last updated on Wednesday, July 11, 2012

(UNDATED) - Indiana Schools Superintendent Dr. Tony Bennett announced the latest round of ISTEP test scores Tuesday.

Bennett says 71-percent of students passed both the English and Math portions of the exam during the 2011-2012 school year. Bennett says that figure is up by one-percent over last year and eight-percent over the past three years.

Bennett cited numerous schools across Indiana that showed significant results improvement. They include: Ferdinand Elementary in Dubois County where 99 percent of students passed, Dickinson Fine Arts Academy in South Bend which showed passing gains of 26 percent, Francis Parker Elementary and Middle Schools in Indianapolis which showed 16-percent improvement and Columbus Signature Academy of Columbus which showed passing gains of 30 percent.

Bennett says the original passing goal was 90 percent for this year, but adds that the overall trend is encouraging. Bennett admits that the statewide 71-percent figure amounts to a "C" in letter grade terms, but says the state is on an upward trend nonetheless.

He attributes gains to increased teacher accountability and student measurement, greater parental involvement, full-day kindergarten and higher expectations. Bennett adds that giving individual school districts and schools the freedom to be creative with that framework also continues to play a crucial role.
