Last updated on Tuesday, July 3, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - One person was killed and five people were injured in a shooting on the city’s west side early Tuesday, police said.

Investigators said they believe the shootings happened when a fight broke out among a group of women gathered near Ben Davis Park, but the motive behind the fight was not released.

Just after 12:30 a.m., Indianapolis metro police officers were dispatched to the 7400 block of West 21st Street after receiving a 911 call from a woman in distress.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 21-year-old woman in the passenger seat of a Chrysler Sebring who had apparently been shot in the leg.

As officers were responding to the victim, investigators said a Pontiac Grand Am pulled up with another woman, 20, who had been shot in the leg and apparently struck by a vehicle.

As medics were responding to assist the officers, they found a third woman nearby, 21, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

All three women were rushed to Methodist Hospital in critical condition.

A short time later, police said they saw a black man running on East 21st Street. He was taken into custody for questioning. Police also said a vehicle seen leaving the scene was stopped and the occupants were taken into custody for questioning.

As police were investigating the scene on West 21st Street, IMPD received a call on shots fired in the 6000 block of Westhaven Drive. When officers arrived, they found an unidentified black woman in a vehicle who was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 21-year-old man who had been shot in the hip. The victim was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital and investigators called him a person of interest.

Meanwhile, IU Health West Hospital officials told IMPD officers that a 25-year-old black man checked into the emergency room with a gunshot wound to his hand and foot. Police said they believe he could be linked to the incident in the 7400 block of West 21st Street.

Police did not release any of the victims' identities.

Detectives asked anyone with information regarding this incident to please call IMPD Homicide at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
