Four Charged In Cock Fighting Scheme

Last updated on Tuesday, July 3, 2012

(DEARBORN COUNTY) - Four Lafayette men are facing cock fighting charges after a traffic stop near the Indiana-Kentucky border.

Indiana State Police said two vehicles, a Honda Odyssey van and Honda Accord car, were stopped for minor traffic violations Friday on Interstate 74, near the 164-mile marker, in northern Dearborn County. Troopers discovered the van was filled with 21 roosters and paraphernalia commonly associated with cock fighting. Investigators said the vehicles were on the way to Lexington, Ky., where the roosters were to be sold for a cock fighting contest scheduled that night.

Four men were arrested and taken to Dearborn County Law Enforcement Center. Jesus Behena Reyes, 28, Vidal Sanchez, 45, David Sanchez, 43, and Frederico Rojas, 27, all of Lafayette, each face 21 counts of conspiracy to possess a fighting animal, a Class D felony, and one count of possession of fighting animal paraphernalia, a Class B misdemeanor.

The roosters were turned over to Dearborn County Animal Control.

Three juveniles that were also in the vehicles were released to a fifth adult man who was not charged.
