(SOUTH BEND) - The family of a South Bend man who died in police custody wants to know how he suffocated from a plastic bag after fleeing officers.
Michael Anderson, 31, died early Sunday shortly after being taken into custody.
Officers investigating reports of a stolen mo-ped began pursuing Anderson late Saturday. The St. Joseph County prosecutor's office said Anderson was choking on a plastic bag containing marijuana and a dollar bill when they caught him, The South Bend Tribune reported.
Anderson died at Memorial Hospital.
Attorney Moe Said says he is requesting police records and interviewing witnesses to find out how long it took for officers to call paramedics and whether excessive force was used.
The prosecutor's office said there is no indication police acted improperly.
Anderson's death remains under investigation.
