Last updated on Wednesday, July 18, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - An Indianapolis father has admitted to violently shaking and critically injuring his 9-month-old son, police said.

Johnny Bishop Jr., 30, was charged Tuesday with two counts of aggravated battery, one count of battery and one count of neglect of a dependent.

Police were called to Z Auto at 1149 E. Troy Ave. on July 11 on a report of a child not breathing, where they found Bishop performing CPR on the baby.

The 9-month-old was taken to Indiana University Health Riley Hospital for Children in critical condition with bleeding on the brain and a possible skull fracture.

Bishop, who works at the car lot, told police he had been bringing his son and his 3-year-old daughter to work with him because his wife is in the hospital and that he was very stressed.

According to the probable cause affidavit, he originally told police that the 9-month-old had fallen out of his car seat, but Bishop later changed his story, admitting that he had shaken the boy twice that day.

"I shook him, like a (expletive)," he said, using a slur for mentally disabled people, according to the probable cause affidavit. "It is my fault. I need to control my stupid temper."

Police said Bishop has a previous conviction for battery on a child involving another infant.

His trial is set for Sept. 17.
