Connersville Man Dies Swimming In Whitewater River

Last updated on Friday, July 6, 2012

(Connersville) - A Connersville man is dead after swimming in the Whitewater River in Fayette County Thursday.

Indiana Conservation Officers say emergency personnel were called to the river after 45-year-old Michael Wayne Day went underwater while swimming in the river and did not resurface.

Witnesses say Day was attempting to swim across the river when he went under and came back up for a short time. Conservation Officer Brandon Shoults says Day then struggled and went back under.

Day was located underwater about 20 minutes after the initial 911 call. He was taken to Fayette Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officer Shoults says alcohol was a factor in the incident. The Department of Natural Resources warns swimmers against the use of alcohol, combined with excessive sun and heat exposure, while swimming.
