(UNDATED) - The cicadas are here, just a little bit early, but could that be as a result of the recent heatwave?
Department of Natural Resources Entomologist Dr. Phil Marshall says while the arrival of the cicadas is a tad bit early, it's not so much because of the extremely hot temperatures that we've been seeing recently.
Dr. Marshall says the early spring is mostly likely the main catalyst for the early cicada arrival because the Indiana soil didn't go through such a hard winter.
Dr. Marshall says it's mostly likely the annual cicadas, also known as the "Dog Day" cicada, that we're seeing arriving now. He says there are three other main species of cicadas seen in Indiana including the 17-year locusts called Brood 10.
However, Dr. Marshall says we aren't due for seeing, or hearing, those until 2021.
