(LaGRANGE) - A carnival worker in northern Indiana was arrested Tuesday and faces misdemeanor public intoxication charges after police said he was drunk and drinking a spiked lemon shake-up while operating fair rides.
According WANE-TV, Melvin Martin, 51, was in charge of operating a ride at the LaGrange County 4-H Fair when he was arrested, police said. He was charged with letting kids on and off the ride, securing them and controlling the speed of the ride.
According to court documents, the carnival manager called police to alert them of his suspicion that Martin - recently hired at the time - was high on alcohol or drugs. An officer on the scene reported noticing Martin's manual dexterity was very poor and he was mumbling. He also had bloodshot eyes and his breath smelled of alcohol, the officer said. Court records show when given a breath test, he registered .21 blood-alcohol content - more than twice the legal limit for driving.
Martin was arrested on preliminary charges of public intoxication and the "substantial risk of injury and life that was created by operating carnival equipment while highly intoxicated," according to the probable cause affidavit.
