Statewide Smoking Ban Goes Into Effect July 1st

Last updated on Tuesday, June 26, 2012

(EVANSVILLE) - Anti-smoking advocates hope the upcoming statewide ban on smoking will prompt smokers to kick the habit.

There are a few exemptions, but the law requires most public places, work places and restaurants to prohibit smoking.

Indiana rates high with adult smokers at 21.2 percent.

Health officials hope the smoking ban that goes into effect on July 1st puts a dent in those numbers.

Evansville doctor David Schultz says Indiana spends about 10-point-1 million dollars for smoking cessation and tobacco prevention spending. Doctor Schultz encourages smokers who wish to quit to visit mytimetoquit.com for help.

Schultz says there could have been more done with the state smoking ban, but he believes it's a good first step.
