Police: 2 Mothers Leave 3 Children Alone In Hot Cars

Last updated on Wednesday, June 6, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana State Police arrested a woman on charges of neglect after allegedly leaving her 1-year-old child in the care of her 9-year-old child in a hot car while she attended a job fair.

The incident was the second arrest made in as many days in Marion County after Nicholet Bracey was arrested on Monday on charges of leaving her 4-year-old son in a hot car while she went to work.

Bracey and Jones face charges of felony neglect, RTV6's Ebone Monet reported.

The incidents shocked Hoosier parents, including Sandy Deyoe.

"I think that it's very scary. I couldn't do it, but I was fortunate enough that I didn't have to be in that situation. I can't imagine being in a situation where I'd have to make that decision," Deyoe said.

Other parents had sympathy for Jones.

"I don't think (Jones) should have been arrested. Maybe cited or warned, something of that nature, but unfortunately it's hard to find a job and it's hard to find sitters as well," parent Ericka Quinn said.

Police said Jones left her children in the car, for what witnesses said may have been up to two hours.

"The law doesn't specify a time. The law said you have to take care of your dependents. Their life and their health, and obviously this amount of time that they were left alone with no one around there, because anything can happen while you're gone," ISP Sgt. Rich Myers said.

In both cases, the children were unharmed, police said.
