(UNDATED) - A man who may succeed Mitch Daniels as Governor says Purdue University has made an excellent hire.

The Republican nominee for Governor, Congressman Mike Pence, says the Daniels appointment is "great for Purdue and great for every Hoosier."

Pence says higher education offers great potential for Indiana's economic growth. "I think Mitch's intellect, his energy, his visionary leadership will benefit not only Purdue students and faculty," said Pence. "But I believe it will improve the quality of Indiana's workforce and create new economic opportunities for all Hoosiers."

And there's a family connection. "My son, who's a Boilermaker, sent me a text message when the rumor started," said Pence. "He said Dad maybe I'm gonna get to call Mitch Daniels Mr. President after all."

After Thursday's unanimous vote by the Board of Trustees, Daniels will take the job early next year.
