(LOUISVILLE, KY) - At least 75 percent of the entertainment rides at Louisville’s former Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom, which members of Santa Claus’ Koch family are in the process of leasing, need overhauling.
That situation and other problems with the 58-acre park are expected to delay its reopening until 2014.
A family spokesperson says reopening the park which will be called "Bluegrass Boardwalk" in 2013 no longer is an option.
The park acreage and assets, once known as Kentucky Kingdom, are owned by the State of Kentucky under the umbrella of the state fair board.
The Kochs are seeking a 50-year lease, plus two renewable leases of 25 years each.
The Koch family says when Kentucky Kingdom was closed in 2009, needed winter maintenance was not performed on the rides.
75 percent of the rides will require a significant overhaul based on an in-depth inspection by certified ride experts.
The Koch family owns Holiday World & Splashin' Safari
The Kentucky park is projected to bring 800 seasonal jobs and 25 full-time jobs.
A spokesperson for Holiday World and Splashin' Safari, the Koch's parks in Santa Claus says Bluegrass Boardwalk and Holiday World will operate as two totally separate parks.
