(INDIANAPOLIS) - Hoosiers using the Monon Trail on Sunday were victims of a tack attack.
Cyclists, runners, walkers and joggers ran into dozens of tacks sprinkled along the trail near the Kessler Bridge in Broad Ripple.
Charlie Revard owns The Bike Line and said he's been busy replacing tires and selling tubes since the attack, RTV6's Jenna Kooi reported.
"It is a great inconvenience because you have to stop and interrupt your day and fix flats. The sad part is to have to see the children walking their bikes with their parents, and they were just out to have a good time and it's ruined," Revard said.
The tack attack got so bad that IndyCog, a bicycle advocacy group, took action Sunday. Members rented magnets on wheels and attached them to bikes. They rode on the Monon starting near the White River in Broad Ripple and then past the Kessler Bridge.
"We didn't hit anything until we hit the bridge, and then you could hear noises, almost like a firecracker, and they were hitting the magnet behind the aluminum," said Kevin Whited, IndyCog's executive director.
Whited said IndyCog collected as many as 200 tacks, and he believes they were placed on the trail on purpose.
"I'm sure they didn't ever think through the process. Just, 'Oh, we'll hit the bikers,'" and threw them down. But they didn't realize there are runners, kids with flip-flops, and dogs, lots of dogs," Whited said.
Officials said most of the tacks should be cleaned up, but advised people who use the Monon near Broad Ripple to remain cautious.
