(NEW HAVEN) - A man died near New Haven Friday morning after his car was struck by a train and dragged several hundred feet.

The Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reports the crash happened around 7:00 a.m. when the car was pushed 150 yards to a railroad bridge over the Maumee River, scraping against the metal beams.

The gates were down and lights were flashing at the crossing, but rescuers say they could not tell whether the car went around the gates.

A spokesperson for Norfolk Southern, the operator of the train, says the speed limit for trains in the area is 60 mph and the train was moving at about 30.
