(JENNINGS CO) - A Jennings County man who police said beat his girlfriend's son has been arrested and faces numerous charges.

Alan L. "Trey" Goins, 25, of North Vernon was arrested Friday by deputies from Jennings County Sheriff's Department.

The arrest stemmed from an investigation into injuries suffered by a 2-year-old boy who was brought Friday morning to the emergency room at St. Vincent Jennings Hospital.

The boy's injuries, which were numerous, included head trauma, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.

Maj. Jerry Shepherd, spokesman for the sheriff's department, did not know the severity of the child's injuries.

Upon leaving the hospital, deputies, with assistance from an Indiana State Police crime scene technician, investigated and collected evidence from a home in the 5700 block of East Road 325N.

Goins faces charges of:

  • Battery on a child younger than 14 resulting in serious bodily injury
  • Aggravated battery
  • Possession of methamphetamine
  • Possession of paraphernalia
  • Possession of a firearm by a violent felony offender
  • Intimidation

Goins was on parole from the Indiana Department of Correction for a previous offense, according to the release.

Child Protective Services is assisting with the investigation.
