Expert: Sheryl Crow Has Most Common Benign Brain Tumor

Last updated on Thursday, June 7, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Pop star Sheryl Crow recently announced that she has a benign brain tumor.

The non-cancerous tumor is called a meningioma which St. Vincent Chief Neurosurgeon Dr. Carl Sartorius says is the most common kind of benign brain tumor. "Most brain tumors are malignant but the most common ones that are benign are meningiomas and brain tumors in general are pretty rare," Sartorius says. "They only occur in one every ten thousand people."

Dr. Sartorius says meningiomas typically don't need to be surgically removed but they do need to be scanned frequently to make sure they don't grow any larger. He says most meningiomas are located in "low-grade" areas and as long as the patient doesn't show any negative symptoms, then surgery can be avoided.

Crow, who is also a breast cancer survivor, took to her Facebook page earlier this week saying, "Please don't worry about my 'brain tumor', it's a non-cancerous growth.
