(GREENWOOD) - Wednesday's hot and dry conditions played a role in a fire in Johnson County.

Daniel Miller of WISH TV reports that a cabin caught fire in the 16-hundred block of Curry Road in Greenwood.

Crews quickly called for back-up to keep the fire from spreading.

Fire crews thought that they had a massive grass fire on their hands.

"As the first units arrived, they realized it was actually a house back in the woods," said White River Township Fire Chief Jeremy Pell.

From several pictures, you can see the intensity of the flames on the front and the back of the cabin.

Investigators said the structure was vacant.

Because of the dry conditions fire crews went in to over drive to put out the blaze.

Johnson County is one of 42 counties under a burn ban and crews were concerned the fire would spread.

"Their priority was keeping it out of the woods and keeping it from spreading due to the dry conditions and the winds that was coming out of the south," Chief Pell said.

Chief Pell said because of the limited hydrants in the area, crews had to snake a thousand feet of hose to the cabin to fight the blaze.

"We did most of the work with the tankers before we got the line laid from the fire hydrant," he said.

Tankers from Whiteland and Bargersville Fire Departments assisted with bringing extra water to the scene.

Chief Pell credits his fire crews from stopping the fire from spreading.

He said other than a few tress caught in the middle of the flames, they kept the fire from moving in the woods.

"They guys just did a spectacular job keeping the fire in check," Chief Pell said. Investigators are not sure what caused the blaze.
