(ANDERSON) - Some Central Indiana leaders are joining forces in a renewed push to revitalize the overall state’s economy and auto sector. They include the mayors of Anderson and Connersville.
It's called the "Automotive Community Revitalization Roundtable."
Anderson Mayor Kevin Smith says his city has been able to diversify its economy following the decline of General Motors. However, he says the roundtable is aiming to revive closed factory sites and lure more industry overall.
Smith says at the height of GM with Guidelamp and Delco Remy, auto jobs in Anderson topped 24,000. More recently, Smith says Anderson has been successful in attracting companies like Nestle, Mancor and others. He says those firms have no real connection to the auto industry and the city needs more business diversity.
Smith says marketing and mainly infrastructure, including fiber optics and sewerlines are crucial for luring greater industry.
The roundtable is set for tomorrow, Tuesday, June 26th from 9am-4pm at Anderson's Flagship Enterprise Center.
