A Wider Look At The Possible Indy Smoking Ban

Last updated on Thursday, June 7, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - The expanded smoking ban in Indianapolis doesn’t necessarily mean more business for those establishments where you can light up.

The owner of the Indy Cigar Bar, Corey Johnston says his was already a specialized clientele - cigarette smoking was already not allowed inside, so he doesn't expect business to increase. But Johnston is not happy that his theoretical competition at other bars are now banned from allowing smokers, saying the ban infringes on the freedom of business owners to conduct their businesses as they wish.

Johnston also doesn't buy the argument that the smoking ban was needed to protect the health of people who work in bars. He says his employees choose to work there and enjoy cigars, and says people are free to try to find other jobs if they aren't satisfied with the one they have.

Lindsay Grace with Smoke Free Indy claims that is not the case for some workers who need the money. The group still would like to see a blanket smoking ban on all establishments, but Grace says since that isn't politically possible right now, it is not a priority.
