Last updated on Friday, June 8, 2012

(NDIANAPOLIS) - A 4-year-old girl was in critical condition Thursday evening after she was struck by a box truck on Indianapolis’ east side, police said.

The girl was standing with her mother at the corner of Hillside Avenue and 30th Street just before 5 p.m. when she suddenly ran out into the street and was struck, police said.

The driver of the truck, Marvin Howard, 49, told police he saw the girl run out into the street and tried to swerve to miss her, but she was struck by the side and back of the truck.

The girl was taken to Riley Hospital for Children with severe head injuries.

Howard was not injured. He voluntarily submitted to a blood draw at Wishard Memorial Hospital, police said.
