(HAMILTON COUNTY) - Indiana State Police shoot a fleeing suspect in a rural Hamilton County park early Wednesday morning.

According to Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Ray Poole, Hamilton County deputies were patrolling Lafayette Trace Park around 10:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Poole says deputies found a vehicle inside the park and attempted to check it. When they turned on their lights a man ran from the vehicle with a gun in hand.

Deputies ordered the suspect to stop however he ignored their commands, continuing to run into the park.

Deputies established a perimeter and called in the Indiana State Police Emergency Response Section, or SWAT Team, for assistance.

Around 1:15 a.m., after more than three hours hiding from law enforcement, the suspect was located using night-vision-style equipment.

A trooper fired shots at the suspect striking him three times.

He was taken to St. Vincent Indianapolis in critical condition. His identity is not known at this time.

It's not known why the suspect ran from police.
