(NEW ALBANY) - An Indiana mother who lost part of her legs while shielding her children from a tornado in March received a prosthetic leg on Wednesday and took her first steps since her injury.
Stephanie Decker, 36, lost parts of both legs after protecting her two children from falling debris when a tornado packing winds of more than 165 mph tore apart the Henryville home Decker shared with her husband.
At a rehabilitation center in southern Indiana, Decker practiced standing, walking and turning while using parallel bars for support.
Doctors said she will be fitted for her other prosthetic leg in the coming weeks.
Decker has maintained an amazingly positive attitude, choosing to look ahead and not behind.
"I'm positive because I have a second chance at life. We survived something that was pretty traumatic," she said. "I'm here, so I get to raise my kids. There's nothing I can't do. There's nothing that's going to stop me."
