TB Scare Hits Terre Haute Middle School

Last updated on Tuesday, May 22, 2012

(TERRE HAUTE) - The health department is managing a suspected case of tuberculosis at a Vigo County School.

The individual is a student or an employee of Woodrow Wilson Middle School.

The Vigo County Health Department is acting fast to put a plan in place to get all students tested for Tuberculosis.

No details are being released at this time about who it is, or that individual's condition.

The health department plans to test the students and employees at the school next Tuesday. Paperwork went home with the students Monday.

"It mainly spreads from droplet infection, like if someone coughs or sneezes," Regional Hospital's Dr. Ajit Singh said. "It's highly contagious in crowded places, or for people with an immunodeficiency."

Just like a cold or the flu, some people are more susceptible than others, and the illness acts differently in every person.

"People will come with cough, some mucus," Dr. Singh said. "They can also present with unintentional weight loss, night sweats, and fever."

One kind of TB is tough to detect, because the infection can lay dormant for some time. That's why it's important to get every student at Woodrow Wilson tested.
