Prosecutors Mull Charges In 4-Year-Old's Fatal Stabbing

Last updated on Tuesday, May 8, 2012

(INDIANAPOLIS) - Formal charges could be filed this week against a 14-year-old girl accused of fatally stabbing her 4-year-old cousin.

The girl was arrested Sunday after Leon Thomas III was found stabbed multiple times in his grandparents' home at the Beechwood Gardens Apartments in the 2700 block of North Graham Avenue.

The 14-year-old was found walking nearby, covered in blood, police said.

She was arrested on a preliminary charge of murder. She's being held at the city's juvenile detention center.

Brienne Delaney, spokeswoman for the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, said Monday that prosecutors are reviewing police reports and that charges could come as early as Wednesday, although prosecutors could ask a judge for more time to decide on charges.

Indiana law allows children as young as 10 years old to be waived to adult court on murder charges.

Meanwhile, the family and friends are trying to understand what prompted the stabbing.

Once prosecutors settle on formal charges, Delaney said they'll determine if the teen will face those charges in adult or juvenile court.
