(RICHMOND) - A pregnant woman found shot in a car in Richmond died early Monday, police said.
Officers were called to the 700 block of South 20th Street just before 7:30 a.m. on a report of a car stopped in an intersection.
The woman, who police identified as Tonawanda Thompson, 33, was found shot several times in the torso and covered in blood, police said.
She was pronounced dead at Reid Hospital, RTV6's Eboné Monet reported.
The fetus, which police described as late-term, did not survive.
Thompson was a teacher at Fayette Central Elementary in Connersville, investigators said.
School administrators said when Thompson didn't show up to school on Monday, they thought she had went into labor.
"It was really tough. When you kind of expect some happy news with a new life and then to find out that both she and her baby had lost their life, it was just devastating," said Superintendent Russell Hodges.
School counselors said they broke the news to students, but spared details about how she died.
"There were a lot of tears. It was a very difficult day," Hodges said. "We wanted the adults to have an opportunity to grieve and take whatever time they needed, whatever space they needed."
Parents said their children were devastated to learn of the death of one of their favorite teachers.
Police said they do not have any suspects.
The shooting marks the fifth homicide of the year in Richmond.
