(INDIANAPOLIS) - A former Marion County Sheriff’s deputy is accused of sneaking into a friend’s home to steal painkillers.
Douglas Tibbs, 34, was charged Thursday with two counts of burglary and one count each of theft and possession of a controlled substance.
A woman told police that she and her husband had become good friends with Tibbs and his wife because their children went to the same school.
In May, the woman had knee surgery and was prescribed hydrocodone and hydromorphone.
But in the weeks that followed, the woman and her husband noticed that some of her pills were missing, including on days when only the Tibbs had visited the home, police said.
The couple set up a camera pointed at the family's kitchen table, where the woman's pills were kept, and caught Tibbs picking up and looking at the bottles, police said.
When Tibbs was questioned by police, he admitted to entering the couple's home while they were away and stealing between 10 and 12 pills, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Tibbs told police that he purposely left doors unlocked when visiting the couple on two occasions so he could come back later.
But police said they found 47 pills missing from the home and the woman said she once found her daughter's closet rummaged through and her pills missing after she hid her prescriptions there.
Tibbs told police he became addicted to painkillers after a string of medical issues, including an injured back, surgery on his arm and a root canal.
Tibbs has resigned from the Marion County Sheriff's Department, where he had worked since 2004. He had been assigned to the Crime Stoppers unit.
