(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indianapolis metro police are investigating an officer-involved accident on the city's west side.

Just after 2:30 p.m. on Friday, IMPD officers were dispatched to 29th and Harding streets on reports of a vehicle accident and possible entrapment.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a badly damaged red Jeep and a white Lincoln sedan. Initial police reports said that the driver of the Lincoln ran a stop sign and collided with an oncoming Jeep at the intersection.

The driver of the Lincoln, William Wilkins, 78, of Greenwood, was rushed to IU Health Methodist Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said. The passenger, who police identified as Wilkins' wife, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the driver of the Jeep, IMPD officer Scott Aurs, 38, was off-duty at the time. Aurs' young son was riding in the jeep at the time of the crash but was not hurt.

As standard IMPD procedure, the officer was given a blood-alcohol test. The results of the test were not immediately released.

Detectives said they do not believe speed was a cause in the crash and that the investigation was ongoing.

Aurs, a 13-year vetern of IMPD has been involved in an accident before, officials said.

In 2004, Aurs was charged with a DUI after rear-ending another vehicle. He pleaded guilty to the charge and served probation.
